Paracetamol

Paracetamol works by blocking the pain messages to the brain and is also gentle on the stomach. Paracetamol, like the NSAIDs, has both analgesic and antipyretic (for fevers) properties, but no anti-inflammatory properties, which makes it unsuitable for the treatment of inflammatory conditions. However, it is often combined with other medicines, for example as part of cold remedies. It is good for aches, pains and fever, as well as for the symptoms of colds and 'flu.

Paracetamol can be given from 3 months of age onwards in a liquid medicine. From the age of 6 years, paracetamol tablets can be taken at the recommended dosage.
