Strains and Sprains

An estimated two million people suffer from sports injuries every year and many more will sustain injuries to muscles, tendons or ligaments through accidents at home or at work. The two most frequent types of injury are strains and sprains. A strain is the result of excess stretching or overuse of muscles, tendons or ligaments. Even though touching the area causes sharp, sudden pain, movement is not affected. Sprains occur when a tendon or ligament is stretched even more severely than that associated with a strain, and can often result in very restricted and painful limb movement.

For strains and sprains apply the RICE principle:

R Rest the injured limb, to aid healing
I Ice to cool the inflammation and help reduce swelling and bruising, easing immediate pain
C Compress the injured limb using bandages to give extra support
E Elevate the damaged part to help reduce the swelling

Pain relievers that contain aspirin such as Anadin* Extra (300mg Aspirin, 200mg Paracetamol, 45mg Caffeine) can aid in the relief of pain that occurs with strains or sprains. Products that contain ibuprofen such as Anadin* Ibuprofen (200mg Ibuprofen) or Anadin Ultra* (200mg Ibuprofen) can be used to reduce associated inflammation and pain caused by a sprain or strain.
