Back Pain
Back pain is an extremely common complaint that can affect anyone and everyone at some time in their lives; it is also one of the most common reasons for taking absence from work in the adult population. Back pain can strike at any age but people are most vulnerable from their mid forties onwards. Back pain can be classified into two types; chronic and acute, where acute refers to the duration of the back pain and is pain that lasts for less than 3 months, whereas chronic pain is pain that is of longer duration.
Most people who suffer this sort of back pain are adults in their forties and fifties who are otherwise healthy. The pain is often in the lower back region (lumbar area), but can also occur in the buttocks, thighs and upper back.
Painkillers that contain ibuprofen are effective in relieving the pain and symptoms of back pain, including Anadin Ultra* Double Strength 400mg Capsules (400mg Ibuprofen), Anadin Ultra* (200mg Ibuprofen) or Anadin* Ibuprofen (200mg Ibuprofen).
Women are very vulnerable to back pain. Child bearing and child rearing put a heavy load on women's backs, which can cause problems in later years. Other types of back problems can be self-inflicted because of bad habits, generally developed over a long period of time:
- Poor posture
- Over-exertion
- Sitting incorrectly at the desk or in the car (slouching)
- Lifting heavy objects carelessly
- Lack of exercise
In a small number of cases, the back pain may have a more serious underlying cause. If the pain is prolonged or seems to be getting worse, or if there is a fever or weakness/numbness in the limbs or it occurs in a young person or someone over 55, then a doctor should be consulted.
Additional tips:
- Use a hot water bottle, which encourages the muscles to relax
- Sit in chairs with good back support or use a small pillow behind the low part of your back
- Take gentle exercise to help relax the muscles
