TOOTHACHE

What is Toothache?

Toothache is usually due to decay resulting from a bacterial attack on the protective enamel covering the teeth. The bacteria feed on sugary foods that are left in the mouth, and produce acid that eats away the enamel. This exposes the nerve endings, which is why you feel pain.

Dental pain can also be caused by:

  • A fractured or cracked tooth.
  • Irritation of the teeth or gums following dental treatment.
  • An exposed tooth root, caused by over-vigorous brushing or receding gums.
  • Dental abscesses (pockets of infection around the roots of a tooth). Abscesses require urgent attention from a dentist. Left untreated, they can spread infection around the face very rapidly, often requiring antibiotic treatment.
