SORE NECK

What is Sore Neck?

It’s very common to have a sore or stiff neck – while it’s painful, it’s not normally serious. The structures of the neck that might be affected include muscles and nerves, plus the spinal vertebrae and their cushioning disks. Most people find that a stiff neck (when you have difficulty moving your neck, especially to one side) goes away after a couple of days.

A common cause is muscle strain or tension. This can happen during a normal day, from general poor posture, being stuck at your desk for hours, having your monitor in the wrong position, sleeping uncomfortably, or twisting and jarring your neck while exercising. You can also have referred pain, where the actual problem is in the shoulder, jaw, head or upper arms.

If you experience stiff neck with other flu symptoms, please see your doctor.

You should seek medical advice if the pain is severe, or lasts for more than three days.

Preventing a Sore Neck

Check your car:

  • Good shock absorbers will make both your car and your body run more smoothly.
  • Be aware of open windows.

Mobile phone headset:

  • Avoid holding your mobile phone with your shoulder. If you like to talk whilst you’re on the move, always use a headset.

Relax

  • Don’t overdo it! If you’re feeling under the weather or tired, give your body a break.
  • Experiment with relaxation techniques like meditation and listening to music.
  • Indulge in a massage to release tension.
  • Take time out to enjoy yourself – whether you’re listening to music, walking in the park or catching up with friends.
