PERIOD PAIN

What is Period Pain?

Period Pain is caused by the release of prostaglandins, chemicals that control the strength of the womb’s contractions. During your period, your womb contracts to shed the unfertilised egg and unused lining. The higher your prostaglandin level, the stronger the contractions and the worse your Period Pain.

Over half of all women in Britain suffer from period pain at some point. Although the intensity and duration varies from person to person, it always occurs in the lower abdomen, sometimes spreading to the legs and back. The cramping sensation feels very different from any other kind of stomach pain.

For some women, pain starts on the first day of the period, while for others it’s just before. It can last as little as two or three hours, or as long as two to three days, and can be sharp and stabbing or a dull, steady ache. You should seek medical advice if the pain is severe.
